It was revealed that 2,000 Brits felt that gadgets were the worst Christmas gift which would more often than not remained unused. It was revealed that 31% of Brits receive technological gifts at Christmas that they don’t want or use. Some of the reasons for not using the device were that 40% didn’t have the tine to use them; 23% didn’t see the point of them; 16% owned up and said they didn’t like the gift; while 12% said they couldn’t be bothered to clean the device.  Take a look around a typical business today and you will probably see computers. They have major roles in many critical tasks. Some of the most important computer data is stored on them and managed by them. When they don’t work, the business itself may stop working.  The first organizational decision for IT support is often to what extent it will be done in house. Any portion not done in house will be outsourced. It is common to organize IT support into levels.  Problems that level 1 people can’t solve are bumped to support level 2. People working level 2 problems must have a better background in working problems and in the specific technology involved. Companies that presently have in house people doing level 2 work may well want to continue with this as long as it is successful at problem resolution. If this is not the case, or if the company is trying to reduce its staff levels, outsourcing might be the way to go.  

 Level 3 support deals with problems that the other levels can’t handle. Technology that was developed by the company should probably have in house level 3 support, because the developers often have the most understanding of it. Otherwise, outsourcing is probably a good idea, either to the vendor that originally created it, or to a support company.  

 Well, that scratches the surface. This issues has many other aspects as well. Every business is different and its specifics need to be understood before good decisions can be made. Sometimes its even a problem finding people with the right knowledge for solving higher level problems. Structuring IT support is one of those jobs that is never done.
